There are many kinks to iron out. Price is high; not blown away by the food. Service, although not terrible, was not on par for the $$$$. From SF Chronicle Restaurant Critic Michael Bauer: sfgate.com/restaurants/d… (I nodded my head in agreement reading their review) Chanile Chang was telling us about the house wine (chardonnay) that a Napa Winery made just for the Sea but declined to inform me which one stating that it was a small winery. Why even bother telling us then?? People will ask. Quite a conservative pour...(1/3 glass = $30) We didn't get a menu/bread for a good half hour. We even asked for a food menu shortly after declining drinks. Our server, Matthew, was all smiles and courteous when he was around but i don't know if he was overwhelmed that night (too many tables) or just distracted.. When it was finally time to order, my mom started talking. His head was turned to another table at the time. Aren't you supposed to be listening to the order of the customer next to you instead of the table 10 feet away? THE FOOD: ( * = what i liked) bread - seaweed croissant, olive bread, flat cracker. soft butter. *amuse bouche - pico herring bite which was very good. tasted like mackerel sashimi *hamachi shot (6 pack) - 6 shot glasses of hamachi sashimi with jalapeno lobster risotto - it was a small portion. between the 5 of us, it wasn't exactly devoured. just okay. clam chowder - the presentation made it seem more interesting than the actual taste. they bring you a bowl without the bisque (deep fried clams and potato, etc). they pour the bisque at the table. it was a BISQUE not a chowder. about 5 deep fried clams in it. no one at the table liked the "chowder". *dungeness crab salad - small, colorful, wonderfully delicious!!! =) john dory - tasted so ordinary. nothing about this dish stood out. *seared mero - hawaiian fish was similar to chilean sea bass. not seared but cooked. it was tasty especially with the sweet potato sauce on the side and the broccolinis. love the composition and flavor to every bite =) lobster - good not great *duck - tender pieces of duck sliced neatly across the plate. on one side there was a circle of beet cabbage; on the other side there was a circle of bacon cabbage. *side of vegetables - for some reason, mom and SIL were raving about the veggies, how they were cooked, etc. THEY WERE RAVING ABOUT VEGGIES (not the seafood) To be honest, the duck was much better than the seafood. It's called The Sea...hmm... We were offered to try their truffled fries. They were fairly good. My bro said it was the best thing of the night. Then there was about 15-20 minutes where our waiter was nowhere to be seen. We were done with dinner. Waited for the dessert menu to be offered...It was an actual twenty minutes, not my imagination. Dessert wasn't very good. (except for the free cotton candy) Dark Chocolate Souffle with Mint Macarons - I have never had a dessert look sooo tempting that disappointed me 100%. NEVER. It was beautiful. Huge souffle that had the fluffy outside. They made a hole to pour in the creme anglaise. Two medium sized macarons sat at the end of the souffle. Thought it was going to be heaven in my mouth.. Then reality hit, it was all AN ILLUSION. We were told that the dark chocolate souffle was 65% chocolate. Then how come I didn't taste any chocolate at all. Besides being a brown color, it might as well had no chocolate. The souffle was fluffy on top, just tasted like fluffy meringue with a bit of sugar. WHERE WAS THE CHOCOLATE??? Oh, and don't get me started on the macarons. Guess the pastry chef was trying to mimic the Milk Cafe (Los Angeles, CA) macaron ice cream sandwiches. BIG FAIL. The texture of that macaron was completely wrong. I didn't want to make a scene but I really wanted to ask for the pastry chef to come out and actually EAT the other mint macaron since NO ONE DID. Wonder if pastry chefs eat what they created before it comes out to ensure that the product is of the correct taste and texture that he was trying to create.. That souffle won an award in my mind: THE WORST SOUFFLE, by far, I have ever had to date. Let there be no souffle worse for the future. I don't want to eat bad souffles.. *Pucker Up - The plate was big. dessert took up about 20% of the space...lol. We did enjoy this one. The cute marshmallow-looking custard with yuzu on top of a crunchy cookie with a side of ice cream. The free cotton candy was delicious. Ours was a grape flavor. It's fun to eat and great conversation. Complimentary dessert bites arrived. Good presentation but they were a fail. Pastry Chef Huynh really needs to taste what he is making. The chocolate cake pop was doughy. The Sea needs work but has potential. Parking lot is small. p.s. A little spider arrived on our table (from the celiing?). We did not inform them. 2.5 stars
